Friedman's son said she died on September 8 at a hospital in Richmond, Virginia.Virginia, due to old age, according to AP.Mrs. Friedman will be laid to rest with her late husband at Arlington National Cemetery.
On August 14, 1945, the Japanese announced their surrender to the Allies. At that time, Friedman was only a 21-year-old dental assistant. When the news was broadcast, thousands of people in New York City, USA, poured into the streets from restaurants, shops, and cinemas, to celebrate the important event. It was also the moment when sailor George Mendonsa saw Friedman, spun the young girl around and kissed her. The two had never met before. In fact, Mendonsa was on a date with nurse Rita Petry, who would later become his wife.
Photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt captured the moment the couple shared a kiss. The photo later appeared in Life magazine as "VJ Day in Times Square" but became more widely known simply as "The Kiss."
“I didn’t see him coming, and before I knew what was happening, he was hugging me,” Ms. Friedman recalled in 2012. After that hug and kiss, they went their separate ways.
