Using a "trick" to fool the camera, Bui Manh Hai (born in 1993), residing in Ha Lam ward, Ha Long city, Quang Ninh province, could not have imagined that he would be arrested just 10 hours after committing the crime.

Thinking that he had disguised himself so well, when the police raided his house, Hai was still confident: "You arrested the wrong person, I don't know anything about the robbery...".

Masked robbers act rashly

At around 12:40 p.m. on September 21, the Nam Tu Liem District Police, Hanoi, received a complaint from Ms. Tran Thi Sang, a clothing saleswoman on Phu Do Street, Nam Tu Liem District, stating that Ms. Sang had just been threatened by a young man, about 25 years old, wearing a mask, a black and white plaid short-sleeved shirt, blue jeans, and a crossbody bag, who held a knife to her neck and robbed her of 1.4 million VND from the store.

At first, he came in to buy a sports shirt, then chose a shirt and paid 150,000 VND. When Ms. Sang returned the change, the customer said he did not want to buy it anymore and asked for a refund.

An hour later, the young man returned to continue choosing a second shirt. When he went to the corner of the house to try on the shirt, Ms. Sang, who was sitting at the checkout counter next to him, was suddenly threatened by a customer who came over and used a fruit knife to threaten her neck, asked her not to shout, and forced her to take all the money in the sales book and give it to him.

After stuffing the money Ms. Sang gave her into her pocket, the robber forced the victim to sit facing the wall in the changing area, pulled the curtain, and made her count from 1 to 20. Seeing that the robber had a knife, the female clothing saleswoman did not dare to cry out and did as he asked. When Ms. Sang pulled the curtain to leave the changing area, the subject quickly disappeared.

After receiving the case, Nam Tu Liem District Police reported to the Criminal Police Department - Hanoi City Police to coordinate in examining the scene and focusing on investigating the case. After 10 hours of active investigation, through measures to screen the subject, check the recording system of security cameras around the scene and the direction of the subject's escape, the police force, with the support of people providing images, identified the perpetrator as Bui Manh Hai (born in 1993), renting a room in the area of Le Quang Dao Street, Phu Do Ward, Nam Tu Liem District.

During an emergency search of Hai's boarding house, the police seized a 25cm long fruit knife with a black plastic handle and a 3cm wide blade that Hai admitted to using to threaten to rob property.

Robbery due to… debt

At the Nam Tu Liem District Police Station, Hai confessed that he had just graduated from a prestigious university with a fairly high score. A few days ago, due to lack of money, Hai took his Piaggio - Liberty motorbike to a pawn shop near his house to get 8 million VND. On the appointed day, he still had not earned enough money to redeem the motorbike, and fearing that his family would find out, Hai thought of the scenes in movies and video games and decided to... follow suit to rob the property.

At noon on September 21, Hai prepared a fruit knife and brought clothes in a crossbody bag. Hai left the boarding house, passed by a clothing store and discovered that there were no customers, only Ms. Sang, so he decided to take action. Having robbed more than 1.4 million VND, Hai ran into an alley 500m from the scene, took out a short-sleeved T-shirt he had prepared in his bag, changed, and went back to his boarding room. Hai used the stolen money to redeem the motorbike he had left at the pawn shop earlier.

According to an officer of the Criminal Police Department - Nam Tu Liem District Police, Hai was quite cunning when committing the crime. Afraid of being caught by the security cameras installed by residents on Phu Do Street, before committing the crime, Hai took a detour from the boarding house to Le Quang Dao Street, then went back so that if he was discovered, the investigation agency would think that Hai was from another place. About 1 hour before the incident, Hai went into a clothing store to scout the situation, but at that time, the store was quite crowded so the subject could not commit the robbery. Hai's purpose in giving money to Ms. Sang and getting the change back was to know where the store employee kept the money to make it easier to act.

Hai's entire actions as well as his movements after committing the crime were recorded by a local camera. Therefore, just a few hours after Ms. Sang reported the crime, the police identified the culprit as Bui Manh Hai.

Currently, the Investigation Police Agency - Nam Tu Liem District Police has issued an emergency arrest warrant and criminal detention for Bui Manh Hai for the act of "Robbery"./.
