Russia shocked by cannibal couple

Russian police have arrested a couple in the Krasnodar region for killing and eating at least 30 people over the past 18 years. The couple have confessed to the crime.

Russian news agencies quoted police as saying that the couple had killed and eaten between 7 and 30 people, even "canning" the victims' flesh and taking pictures with the bodies.

According to initial reports, the man was identified as Dmitry Baksheev, 35 years old. This subject confessed to committing such terrible acts since 1999. His photo was released with a woman who is said to be his victim.

According to Mash news agency, Dmitry and his wife Natalia, 42, lived in a military dormitory. In the couple's home, police found several videotapes teaching cannibalism, Livekuban.ru news site reported.

Seven bags of human body parts, 19 skin samples and parts packed in boxes were found by police in the closets and cellars of Dmitry's house. RT reported that the couple not only ate human flesh but also "served it to others" - servicemen at a nearby military school, where Natalia was a nurse.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the charges, but the details they have released have shocked many. Police sources, who asked not to be named, said the couple were definitely accused of serial murder and cannibalism.

The whole gruesome story was discovered when construction worker Roman Khomyakov went to a police station in Krasnodar, southern Russia on September 11, presenting the horrific images he had seen on a phone he had found on the street.

Khomyakov saw a series of photos on the cracked screen of his black Samsung phone, including a man posing with what appeared to be a woman’s head and wrist. Khomyakov told police he was even more shocked when the man on the phone approached him and asked if he had picked up the phone.

Krasnodar police traced the SIM card to a 35-year-old man registered at a military school dormitory where he and his wife, Natalia, were employees. "They have been arrested," Russia's Investigative Committee said.

Many images and videos of the search of the couple's residence have been released by Russian authorities.
