(Baonghean.vn) - Due to market demand, farmers in Anh Son district have grown off-season cucumbers; currently, they are harvesting early cucumbers.

For nearly 2 weeks now, Ms. Nguyen Thi Giang's family in village 4, Cam Son commune, Anh Son has been busy because of the cucumber harvest season. According to Ms. Giang, in previous years, people planted seeds in November, making it difficult to sell them when the harvest season began. This year, people planted in separate crops and harvested earlier, so the product had a good price.

Because of planting during the rainy season, Ms. Giang had to cover the cucumbers with plastic so that they could grow well. Currently, with an area of nearly 2 sao of cucumbers, she can harvest 80 - 90 kg each day, sometimes 1.2 quintals per day. Because there are few cucumbers at this time, they can sell at a good price and are easy to consume. On harvest day, traders come to the fields to buy at 8,000 - 10,000 VND/kg, and she estimates that this crop will make a profit of about 15 million VND after deducting expenses.

Currently, farmers in villages 7 and 8 of Tuong Son commune are also harvesting early cucumbers. Mr. Tran Van Binh in village 7 said: His family has 3 sao of rice fields, and in recent years has switched to growing cucumbers. This year, he planted the early cucumber crop in early August and harvested from late September to the end of October; it is estimated that each sao of cucumbers will yield 1 - 1.5 tons, earning a profit of 8 - 10 million VND.

Early-season cucumbers are grown by many people in Cam Son, Tuong Son, and Tao Son communes with an area of nearly 15 hectares. According to people's calculations, cucumbers are easy to grow, easy to care for, and have low investment costs; during the season, they can be harvested continuously every 2 days for 1 month, with each hectare earning from 100 to 150 million VND.

With the value of cucumbers, Anh Son district is encouraging people to expand the area on fertile land, hilly land, and rice fields to increase income. At the same time, it is coordinating with specialized sectors in localities with large vegetable areas to transfer techniques, helping people have conditions to increase income.
