(Baonghean) - Following the defeat of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) in Mosul - the terrorist group's stronghold in Iraq, there are reports confirming that IS is also about to be driven out of Raqqa, Syria.

The US-backed coalition forces declared they were preparing to "hand over" the jihadist fighters another devastating defeat.

On October 14, according to officials close to the campaign to retake Raqqa, US-backed forces were close to defeating the last remnants of the ISIS terrorist group in the Syrian city.

Colonel Ryan Dillon, spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition, told Reuters that about 100 ISIS fighters had surrendered and been escorted out of Raqqa since October 13. He said, “We will still have to fight hard in the coming days and we cannot set a specific time when we consider ISIS to have suffered a complete defeat in Raqqa.”

However, the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) – one of the influential groups within the opposition coalition known as the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) – asserted that coalition forces would clear ISIS from the city within the next few days.

YPG spokesman Nouri Mahmoud said: “The battle is ongoing in Raqqa. ISIS is on the verge of defeat. The city will be liberated very soon.”

With US support, the SDF has fought against both ISIS and forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The SDF's offensive to retake Raqqa began in June and has lasted longer than many officials in the US-led coalition had anticipated.

In early 2014, IS captured Raqqa in a large-scale offensive in Syria and Iraq. The city has since become the jihadist group's main stronghold in Syria.

However, IS lost much of its "territory" after US and Russian-backed forces began independent offensives against the terrorist organization.

In July, U.S.-backed Iraqi forces also recaptured Mosul – the most important stronghold of jihadists in Iraq.
