In the 2016/17 season, Real Madrid broke the curse of the Champions League by becoming the first team to successfully defend the title since the tournament was renamed in 1992. However, their achievements did not bring much money, even less than Leicester City.

By defeating Juventus in the final last June, Real Madrid broke the curse of the Champions League by becoming the first team to successfully defend the title since the tournament was renamed in 1992. However, the fans, club leaders and supporters of this team have reason to be upset because the prize money they received was relatively small, totaling only 81 million euros.

Meanwhile, Leicester City, who were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Champions League last season, were awarded €81.7 million, more than Real Madrid. Last season was the first time Leicester participated in the Champions League. Former coach Claudio Ranieri's students won the Premier League title miraculously before reaching the quarter-finals of Europe's most prestigious tournament.

Real Madrid's prize money is even more controversial as it is much less than their final defeat, Juventus. The Serie A side received a total of 110.4 million euros.

According to UEFA regulations, each team participating in the Champions League will be awarded a minimum of 12.7 million euros. After that, each win in this arena will be awarded an additional 1.5 million euros. The club will receive 500,000 euros if it draws with its opponent. Reaching the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final will be awarded 6 million, 6.5 million, 7.5 million, and 15.5 million respectively for winning the championship, and 11 million for finishing second.

The remaining 500,000 euros when the two teams draw will be collected and awarded to the clubs in the group stage based on the number of wins each team has.

In addition, the clubs will be rewarded with additional TV rights in each country. Leicester City is a club from England, so it will be awarded 49.1 million euros. Meanwhile, Real Madrid will only receive 26.1 million euros because it is from Spain.
