To improve the quality of medical examination and treatment for people, in 2010, Vinh Transport Hospital cooperated with the Central Eye Hospital to implement the Phaco cataract surgery method at the Ophthalmology Department and thanks to the application of new techniques and the support of leading specialists in Hanoi, the Ophthalmology Department - Vinh Transport Hospital was very successful in Phaco surgery.

Doctor Tran Thi Bich Thuy - Head of the Ophthalmology Department, Vinh Transport Hospital said: "Cataracts often appear in the elderly, people with diabetes, people with a history of eye trauma... and symptoms of cataracts include: Blurred vision, the patient's eyes are often gradually blurred, lasting from several months to years. Visual quality is reduced in both low light conditions and high light conditions. Vision is often unstable when changing light conditions, changing glasses very quickly, often increasing myopia.

Although cataract is the number one cause of blindness in the world, it can be completely cured by Phaco surgery. This is an advanced treatment method with the advantages of fast surgery (7-10 minutes), painless surgery, quick healing of the operated eye, small incision, high safety, few complications, fast recovery of vision after surgery and discharge after 1 hour. With these advantages, the Ophthalmology Department has more and more patients coming to have Phaco surgery.

During the process of performing cataract treatment, the Department of Ophthalmology has made great efforts to innovate examination and treatment methods to better serve the people. In mid-October 2017, with the support of the Central Eye Hospital's doctors, the Department boldly innovated the anesthesia method during Phaco surgery and was supported and highly appreciated by patients.

Specifically, in the past, when performing surgery, doctors often anesthetized by injecting Lidocaine 2% + Hyaza next to the eyeball to reduce complications due to anesthesia such as needle puncture into the eyeball, injection into the blood vessel, hematoma of the eye socket... Currently, the Department has used the method of local anesthesia with Alcaine 0.5% (Proparaine hydrochloride) on the surface of the eyeball. Changing the anesthesia method has brought many benefits to patients such as: shortening the time, reducing pain for patients and reducing complications when anesthetizing...

After applying anesthesia, the surgeon uses a 2.2 mm scalpel to cut into the corneal edge to enter the anterior chamber, tear the anterior capsule of the lens, use a phaco tip to phaco the nucleus and suck it out, then place the artificial lens. The incision is very small so no stitches are needed and is bandaged after surgery.

Patient Duong Dinh Tuu (born in 1938) in Nghi Kim commune - Vinh city said: "When I had my eyes examined at Vinh Transport Hospital, the medical staff were very enthusiastic in guiding and examining me, and when I decided to have Phaco surgery, I was given very specific advice. I am very happy that this time I had Phaco surgery, the patient was anesthetized by direct eye drops, so it was very convenient and painless, I feel very secure when having Phaco surgery here".

With the continuous application of advanced technology in treatment, serving patients better and better, the Ophthalmology Department of Vinh Transport Hospital is always a trusted address for patients. In the first 9 months of 2017, the Department examined more than 4,000 patients, and performed Phaco surgery for nearly 150 patients.
