'The year-end market of the automobile market'

October 27, 2017 09:03

Sales pressure and the difficulties that were set for 2018 made the VIMS 2017 auto show like a year-end market...

Unlike many previous exhibitions, the Vietnam International Motor Show (VIMS) 2017 taking place in Ho Chi Minh City is more practical instead of emphasizing technology displays, new products or development strategies of each brand.

An exhibition with the participation of 13 brands and organizations on a total area of over 10,000 m2 is actually not too weak for a small auto market that has 2 big exhibitions every year like Vietnam. However, VIMS 2017 is still somewhat lackluster.

The VIMS exhibition is expected to create a boost for the year-end auto market in the context of sluggish purchasing power.

No longer emphasizing on performances, each booth of all 13 brands is almost simply displaying and introducing products to consumers. This is also completely understandable when car manufacturers, especially imported car brands, are facing many difficulties.

The Vietnamese auto market has never been in such a state of suppressed purchasing power as this year. Consumer demand is still considered quite high and the selling prices of many types of cars, including luxury cars, are also at a relatively low level compared to a few years ago. However, the influence of the general psychology of waiting for price reductions in the market still makes auto purchasing power sluggish.

In addition, the time VIMS 2017 takes place is also the starting point for the year-end sales season of the market. Therefore, most car manufacturers only focus on displaying and introducing products. In particular, some car manufacturers also take advantage of launching promotional programs to stimulate consumption.

The Volvo booth was randomly placed right at the entrance of the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Center (HCMC). Volvo has not been in the Vietnamese market for long, but this is the largest market debut of the Swedish brand.

Participating in VIMS 2017, Volvo brought many different car models. Notably, the first appearance of the XC60 SUV. This is a car model that owns the latest safety technology of Volvo. The "strange wind" XC60 is considered a guide for consumers to approach more deeply the luxury car brand with the leading safety index of the world's automobile industry.

Audi also introduced a "newcomer" to the market, the 5-door A3 Sportback. Previously, the new generation 5-seat SUV Q5 also entered the market.

Another German brand, Mercedes-Benz, brought to VIMS 2017 a large list of 20 models, of which the GLA 45 is the only new name.

Since it had focused on the VMS 2017 exhibition held in August, it was understandable that this joint venture did not invest too much in VIMS. Instead, Mercedes-Benz gave consumers "favors" with promotional programs and stimulus measures that this brand does not usually use in the Vietnamese market.

VIMS 2017 Exhibition no longer has many visitors who just come to watch for... fun.

The British duo Jaguar and Land Rover also displayed two new models, the F-Pace and Velar. These are all models in the high-end SUV segment that are popular in the market. The product portfolio of this "brother" pair at VIMS is also quite complete. Land Rover has a range of SUVs from small to large sizes, Jaguar has sporty sedans with personality and a few popular but quite picky SUV models.

In addition to the main force of luxury brands from Europe, the VIMS 2017 exhibition also has the participation of 4 popular car brands and 3 large-displacement motorcycle brands.

While the Dongfeng brand from China is a completely new name and accordingly, the displayed models are also new, the remaining 3 brands, Volswagen, Subaru and SsangYong, did not bring any new models.

The VIMS 2017 year-end "fair" was not as crowded with performances and curious technologies as previous exhibitions. This more or less made the number of visitors less crowded than previous exhibitions.

But in return, VIMS 2017 selects consumers who really have a need to shop instead of mainly welcoming a large number of visitors... for fun.
