The head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that the world is facing a “dark future” if climate change and inequality remain unchanged.

The French head of the IFM said that in 50 years our planet will be “roasted and cooked” unless governments make “important decisions”.

“If we don’t address these issues, the world will be headed for a dark future in 50 years,” she said at a major economic conference in the Saudi capital Riyadh.

In 2015, 195 countries signed the Paris Agreement on climate change with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to avoid temperatures rising more than 2 degrees Celsius in the next 50 years.

“If we do not address climate change and gender inequality, we will be heading towards a dark future,” Ms. Lagarde warned.

This is the fear of catastrophic consequences for the planet if the US leaves the Paris agreement on climate change.

However, in June, US President Donald Trump announced the start of a three-year process to withdraw from the treaty, citing economic disadvantages for the United States.

His actions have faced harsh criticism from activists and world leaders, with former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon accusing Trump of “being on the wrong side of history”.

Mr Trump - who has previously called climate change a hoax - is under pressure from other leaders to honour the agreement.
