12 months in prison for illegal wildlife trafficker

(Baonghean.vn) - Nguyen Thi Xuan bought 27 Northern yellow-fronted box turtles - an endangered, rare wild animal that is prioritized for protection - and 11 common four-eyed turtles to sell for profit.

On October 30, 2017, the People's Court of Do Luong district opened a first-instance trial against defendant Nguyen Thi Xuan, prosecuting her for the crime of "Violating regulations on the protection of animals in the list of endangered, precious and rare species prioritized for protection" as prescribed in Article 190 of the Penal Code.

Between July 21, 2017 and July 24, 2017, Nguyen Thi Xuan bought 27 Northern yellow-fronted box turtles and 11 common four-eyed turtles from a subject in Trang Son commune, Do Luong district to sell for profit.

The Northern yellow-fronted box turtle has the scientific name Cuora Galbinifrons (Bourret 1939). This species is listed in Appendix I, the list of endangered, rare and precious wild plants and animals prioritized for protection, issued together with Decree No. 160/2013/ND-CP dated November 12, 2013 of the Government.

The court of first instance sentenced defendant Nguyen Thi Xuan to 12 months in prison but suspended the sentence, with a 24-month probation period for violating the law./.
