Soybeans are not necessarily good for the heart

There is not enough evidence to show that soy protein prevents coronary heart disease, US scientists say.

Soybeans are good for your health, but they may not protect your heart. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently asked manufacturers to stop advertising soy as a way to prevent heart disease because there is not enough scientific evidence.

Susan Mayne, director of the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Nutrition, told NBC News that the agency reviewed studies on the benefits of soy protein for coronary heart disease and found some inconsistencies. "There is insufficient evidence to show that soy protein prevents coronary heart disease," Mayne said.

Previously, in 2006, the American Heart Association stated that it could not be concluded that soy reduces cholesterol enough to limit the risk of cardiovascular disease due to lack of scientific basis.

Still, researchers are encouraging people to add soy to their diets to replace other less healthy foods. 'Nobody is saying soy is bad,' explains cardiologist Steve Nisseen of the Cleveland Clinic. 'Soy can be part of a healthy diet, but don't expect miracles.'
