Experts from Ilsan Hospital of Dongguk University (South Korea) noted that men are particularly susceptible to health problems compared to women.
In the study, experts looked at the link between loneliness and health in 7,725 adult men and women, all of whom ate alone.
Men had a 45% increased risk of obesity and a 64% increased risk of metabolic syndrome. Meanwhile, women had a 29% increased risk of metabolic syndrome if they “made” two or more meals a day alone.
As more and more people choose to live alone these days, researchers wanted to find out how loneliness drives people to make unhealthy choices when it comes to food.
Previous research has shown that feeling lonely or isolated can lead an individual to turn to junk food instead of a healthy meal, which can lead to prediabetes, high blood pressure and other health problems.
The research results were published in the journal Obesity Research & Clinical Practice.
