Immediately after his visit to Japan, Mr. Trump will fly to South Korea, visiting Camp Humphreys, a US military base about 40 miles south of Seoul.
He is then expected to meet with President Moon Jae-in and talks could heat up given the leaders' differing approaches to North Korea.
President Moon has strongly advocated a calm diplomatic approach to Pyongyang, while Mr Trump has taken a more hardline stance, once calling the North Korean leader “little rocket man”.
On the subject of North Korea, the two leaders may also discuss the THAAD missile defense system.

Mr Trump's next stop could be the most important part of the trip, depending on the topics discussed with President Xi Jinping.
The US president has criticized China’s handling of the North Korea issue, saying it is China’s responsibility to deal with the threat from North Korea. He could try to pressure China to cut off oil and coal supplies to Kim Jong-un’s ailing economy.
Trade will also be in the spotlight after both leaders agreed to a 100-day action plan on economic dialogue and cooperation in April.
