Syrian army surrounds last ISIS stronghold.
Syrian government forces and their allies have positioned themselves around the town of Abu Kemal – the last remaining ISIS stronghold in the country, according to a source close to Sputnik.

"The Syrian army has surrounded Abu-Kemal and taken control of the city with artillery fire," the source said. The Syrian army is expected to liberate the city in the next few days.
On September 5th, the vanguard attacked the city of Deir ez-Zor from the west, and almost immediately turned to attack the eastern suburbs.
Subsequently, government forces broke through IS resistance at the main entrance to the city, securing the route from Palmyra.
After defeating the terrorists from the strategic highlands southwest of the city, the army reached the western bank of the Euphrates.
A few weeks later, government forces destroyed the terrorist base near Abu-Kemal, Meyadin city.
On November 3, the Syrian army commander announced the restoration of full control over Deir ez-Zor.
The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that more than 90% of Syrian territory has been liberated from militants.
