The subject, identified only as “A”, is a 58-year-old man from the US state of Louisiana. He was arrested by police after crossing the Civilian Control Line (CCL) near the North Korean border.

“A” had no permit, leading authorities to believe he crossed the border for “political purposes.”

Such incidents are rare, as North Koreans usually defect across the border – usually to China and then on to Seoul.

The National Intelligence Service, the military and police of South Korea have launched a joint investigation into the matter.

The American citizen is believed to have arrived in Seoul three days earlier. A villager in Baekhak Ward spotted the subject crossing the CCL.

The CCL is drawn just below the demilitarized zone separating South and North Korea.

The US Embassy in Seoul said it was aware of the incident and was looking into it. “If it is true that a US citizen has been arrested, the US Embassy will provide appropriate consular services,” an official said.
