China unveils world's 'most powerful' dual-purpose tank

China Central Television (CCTS) has unveiled the world's most powerful amphibious tank, capable of moving at high speeds on both land and water.

According to CCTS, with a maximum speed of 65 km/h on land and 30 km/h on water, this armored vehicle named VN18 is the fastest tank in the world.

The 26.5-ton vehicle is said to be equipped with a 30mm cannon, a 7.62mm machine gun and an anti-tank missile along with smoke grenades, and is capable of carrying three drivers and 11 soldiers.

It is a product of Chinese state-owned arms manufacturer Norinco.

CCTS aired footage of the military equipment on a program on November 18. The program advertised the 1,600-horsepower assault tank as China's "miracle weapon."

In an interview with CCTS, Zhang Wenhui - Deputy General Manager of Norinco Group - said that VN18 is the fastest dual-purpose tank in the world.

He affirmed: "Only China and the US possess dual-use attack vehicles. Although the US has these vehicles, they do not equip their army. They (the US) tried to develop vehicles faster than ours but failed."
