Popkov's grin on television caused widespread outrage. |
In a rare television interview, serial killer Mikhail Popkov, 53, spoke about his brutal killing spree. In just two years, the former policeman killed 22 women and confessed to killing around 64 more. This made Popkov the most horrific murderer in Russian criminal history.
Nicknamed “The Lone Wolf,” Popkov often raped his victims before beating them to death with an axe, bat or knife. On television, Popkov blamed his wife’s infidelity for fueling his desire for revenge against women.

Despite the brutal murder, Popkov denied being a rapist. He laughed and said, “the girls came to me.” The horrific murder took place in the city of Angarsk, Siberia, Russia.
“I can say 100 percent that no one was raped by me. They did it voluntarily,” Popkov said. He said he was in a relationship with a girl named Elena Porokhina and did not harm her. He had previously said he wanted to “cleanse Angarsk of prostitutes and slutty girls.”

Popkov’s murders began in 1994 and ended in 2000. After raping and killing his victims, he dumped the bodies in the woods. The case was never solved because at the time, DNA testing on police was not allowed. It was only when the DNA results were released that people were shocked by Popkov’s barbaric behavior.
Many people after watching Popkov's interview expressed their dissatisfaction with the mockery he showed. They thought it was an insult to the deceased.
