According to Reuters news agency, Cuban President Raul Castro received North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho in Havana on November 24.

North Korea is facing unprecedented pressure from the United States and the international community over its nuclear missile development program.

Although Cuba has maintained close diplomatic relations with North Korea since 1960, the country also opposes nuclear weapons.

Cuban national television said: "In a fraternal atmosphere, the two sides talked about the historic friendship between the two countries and discussed international issues of mutual concern."

Cuba marks one year since the death of revolutionary leader Fidel Castro

Today (November 25), Cuba celebrated one year after the death of hero Fidel Castro.

The first anniversary of revolutionary Fidel Castro's death will be solemnly celebrated with seven nights of prayers in his memory and many other activities.

On this day last year (November 25, 2016), Cuba's national hero passed away at the age of 90.

Along with this important anniversary, Cuba is also in the process of major events in its political life. Starting tomorrow (November 26), the country will begin to conduct elections at all levels of government and will end with the election of a new president of Cuba at the end of February next year.

Cuban President Raul Castro, 86, has announced he will step down at the end of his second consecutive term.

Earlier, on November 23, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that since last year he had discussed with Mr. Castro the possibility of coordination between the two sides to reduce global tensions with North Korea.

According to Mr. Trudeau, Canada is interested in finding a solution to the crisis on the Korean peninsula not only for regional security in general, but also because in the event of a situation where North Korea launches missiles to attack the US, the path of the missiles will fly over Canadian territory.

This week, Mr. Ri also met with his Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodriguez. According to a statement from the Cuban Foreign Ministry, both foreign ministers condemned the “unilateral and arbitrary listing and labeling” by the United States (referring to the US relisting North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism) that has led to “coercive actions contrary to international law.”

The two foreign ministers called for "respect for the sovereignty of peoples" and the search for "peaceful solutions to conflicts".

Since taking office, President Donald Trump has continuously increased pressure on Cuba, reversing many of the policies of resuming US-Cuba diplomatic relations that were achieved under President Barack Obama.

Cuba maintains an embassy in North Korea, but most of its trade is with South Korea. Last year, Cuba's trade with South Korea was worth $67 million, compared to just $9 million with North Korea.
