Nghe An Rehabilitation Hospital: Pioneer in establishing Stroke Rehabilitation Center and Pain Control Unit

PV:Doctor, could you please tell us the purpose and significance of organizing the Pain Control Conference "Coastal Autumn" with the scientific content "Pain Control Unit - Flexible Clinical Model for Pain Medicine"?

Doctor Thai Thi Xuan:With the consensus of the Hanoi Medical Association and the consent of 12 provincial and sector hospitals nationwide such as Nghe An Provincial Department of Health, Hanoi Pain Relief Association and Nghe An Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital jointly organized the Pain Relief Conference "Coastal Autumn" with the scientific content "Pain Relief Unit - Flexible Clinical Model for Pain Medicine" on 2 days 25 - 26/11/2017 at Nghe An Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital - Address: 220 Binh Minh Street, Cua Lo Town, Nghe An.

This is a major national scientific event, of great significance in the scientific life of Vietnamese pain research experts. More than 500 delegates including presidents and vice presidents of specialized associations (Pain Prevention Association; Musculoskeletal; Oncology; Anesthesia; Rehabilitation; Stroke) directly related to pain prevention work, experts (Prof. Assoc. Prof. Dr.) working in the field of training and clinical practice of pain prevention; heads and deputy heads of provincial health departments; representatives of the boards of directors of 12 hospitals that have and will deploy pain prevention units; staff of pain prevention units operating at medical facilities across the province will attend.

PV:As one of the first hospitals in the province and the North Central region to establish a pain management unit, is that the reason why the hospital was chosen as the main venue for this conference?

Doctor Thai Thi Xuan:Nghe An Rehabilitation Hospital has made continuous efforts to improve the quality of medical examination and treatment, successfully rehabilitating many complicated cases, bringing joy and confidence to patients. The hospital has increased the application of non-drug treatment methods in combination with other treatment methods to improve treatment effectiveness, ensuring the rights of people to be examined, treated and rehabilitated. The hospital has proactively invited leading experts to directly train, examine and transfer techniques to doctors and nurses, thereby significantly improving the professional quality of doctors and nurses.

To meet the needs of patients, especially to reduce the pain of patients during treatment, at the same time improve the quality of life for patients and reduce the burden on the whole society, in April 2017, the Hospital established the Stroke Rehabilitation Center and the Pain Control Unit. From these efforts, the Hospital has successfully treated many complicated cases of rehabilitation, importantly, patients in the province have another reputable treatment facility without having to go to Hanoi for treatment.

It can be affirmed that the pain relief unit of the Rehabilitation Hospital with the help of Professor Nguyen Van Chuong - Former Head of the Department of Neurology, Hospital 103, Chairman of the Hanoi Pain Relief Association - is the first pain relief unit in the North Central region, a pride not only of the Hospital but also of Nghe An province. The important thing is that although it is not the first hospital in the country to establish a pain relief unit, after going into operation, the Pain Relief Unit of the Hospital has created a very good effect. This is proven through the effectiveness of treatment, through the spread... to medical facilities inside and outside the province. And the fact that Nghe An Rehabilitation Hospital was chosen as the venue for this conference proves that.

PV:So can you tell us more about the effectiveness of the treatment since the establishment of the pain relief unit, doctor?

Doctor Thai Thi Xuan:It can be said that the Pain Relief Unit is the heart and soul of the entire Hospital, the concern of the Hospital's leadership, the medical staff, and especially has the important support of Professor Nguyen Van Chuong - Former Head of the Department of Neurology, Hospital 103, Chairman of the Hanoi Pain Relief Association. The Hospital has created all conditions from investing in facilities, equipment to human resources... to meet the requirements of the Pain Relief Unit.

After 6 months of operation, the Pain Control Unit of Nghe An Rehabilitation Hospital has received and examined 758 patients. Of these, 667 patients received pain treatment intervention. Many advanced techniques were trained, directly performed and transferred by Professor Nguyen Van Chuong such as epidural injection of the cervical spine; epidural injection of the lumbar spine; injection to release nerves, ligaments and spine.

In addition, the professor also directly guides the hospital's technicians in treating other neurological diseases such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson's and dementia. Thanks to that, patients in the province have trusted and come to the hospital, without having to travel far.

PV:It is known that, besides being a forum for units to exchange and learn experiences in pain management, on this occasion, the conference will also establish a club for pain management units, is that right, doctor?

Doctor Thai Thi Xuan:That's right, the conference is a forum for pain relief units inside and outside the province to report on their operational experiences and initial achievements. At the same time, listen to important additional opinions to determine the personnel structure, equipment, medicines and functions of the pain relief unit. Especially on this occasion, the Pain Relief Unit Club will also be established and outline a specific annual operational strategy for pain relief activities in practice. A very important part of the conference is that managers and experts will discuss the plan for a step-by-step training approach; pain relief skills training and pain medicine content for the professional team.

It can be said that the Scientific Conference “Coastal Autumn” is a gathering place for progressive managers who have a role in policy making, directly directing training and coaching, and is a forum for experts and scientists who directly implement training and pain management training activities in clinical practice.
