President praises the success of APEC Vietnam Year 2017

The President affirmed that APEC Year 2017 and APEC Summit Week were successful, helping to enhance Vietnam's position in the international arena.

In the article titled "Success of APEC Year 2017 and the Summit Week with the role and position of Vietnam", President Tran Dai Quang affirmed that the 25th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit Week held in Da Nang recently and APEC Vietnam Year 2017 were great successes.

This is an outstanding foreign policy achievement of Vietnam, contributing to enhancing the role of APEC as the leading regional economic cooperation mechanism in a rapidly changing world with turning-point changes, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The President emphasized that "that success marks a new milestone" in the process of international integration and multilateral foreign affairs, contributing to consolidating the trend of peace, cooperation, development and enhancing Vietnam's prestige and position in the international arena.

According to President Tran Dai Quang, Vietnam's role as host of APEC 2017 is both an honor and a great responsibility. It shows the international community's trust in Vietnam.

Taking on the role of host country of APEC Year 2017 is a step to contribute to concretizing the foreign policy set forth by the 12th National Party Congress: "Improving the quality and effectiveness of multilateral foreign affairs, proactively and actively contributing to building and shaping multilateral institutions". The results achieved in APEC Year 2017 will create momentum for Vietnam to assume major international responsibilities in the coming years.

The President said that the recent APEC Summit Week has made Vietnam "the center of attention of the whole world". The gathering of all leaders of APEC member economies, along with more than 11,000 delegates, businesses and domestic and foreign reporters in Da Nang, and the nearly 100 bilateral meetings and contacts held on this occasion, is a testament to the rising position of the Asia-Pacific region on the world political-economic map and the strong commitment of member economies to the APEC cooperation process.

"This also affirms Vietnam's strategic position in the region as well as the special attention and affection that APEC member economies and APEC economic leaders have for Vietnam," the President said. "The record number of more than 4,000 businesses participating in APEC High-Level Week events demonstrates APEC's entrepreneurial, start-up and creative spirit, affirming that APEC is a forum for people and businesses, while opening up new prospects for investment, trade and business growth for the Asia-Pacific region and our country."

The President praised the documents and commitments reached at the APEC 2017 Summit Week, which demonstrated a strong message of determination to uphold APEC's core values ​​of promoting trade and investment liberalization and supporting the multilateral trading system. With the Da Nang Summit Statement "Creating new dynamism, fostering a shared future", Vietnam once again highlighted its mark on the APEC cooperation process.

The initiatives that Vietnam proposed on forming the APEC Vision Group, aiming to build an APEC for people and businesses, capable of adapting and taking the lead in handling global challenges, actively contributing to building a peaceful, stable, dynamic, cohesive and prosperous Asia-Pacific community, were all welcomed.

According to President Tran Dai Quang, the results of the Summit Week have raised the level of APEC cooperation and established the strategic direction of the Forum for many years to come.

On the other hand, the APEC 2017 Summit Week also contributes significantly to deepening relations between member economies and between Vietnam and APEC members.

The President said that the success of APEC 2017 was the result of many subjective and objective reasons. These were Vietnam's correct foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, diversification, multilateralization, deep international integration, proactive and active contributions to building and shaping multilateral institutions; close leadership and direction from the central to local levels as well as the consensus of the entire political system, business community and the entire population.

"We have effectively inherited and promoted valuable lessons in multilateral diplomacy drawn from the nation's history of building and defending the country, especially the successful role of hosting APEC Year 2006 and ASEAN Chair 2010," the President emphasized.

According to President Tran Dai Quang, in addition to Vietnam's diplomatic dexterity, the support and close cooperation from APEC members during the preparation and implementation of activities, especially at the APEC Summit Week, were also factors contributing to the success of the event.

Discussing the benefits that APEC Year 2017 and APEC Summit Week bring to Vietnam, the President said this is an opportunity for "us to introduce to international friends a dynamic, hospitable, peaceful Vietnam with strengths and potential in economy, development, investment, business, and tourism".

During the APEC Summit Week, a total of 121 cooperation agreements and contracts were signed, worth nearly 20 billion USD, nearly 10 times the total value of agreements signed at APEC in 2006, the President said.

"The success of APEC Year 2017 and the Summit Week has created a new momentum for international integration, aroused national pride, the will to be self-reliant and self-reliant, and the strong aspiration to rise up of the business community and people nationwide, highly promoted the spirit of patriotism, the strength of great national unity, and competed to successfully implement the Resolution of the 12th National Party Congress, opening a new glorious period of development for the country," the President concluded the article.
