Millions of Cubans voted in local elections on November 26, paving the way for the election of a replacement for President Raul Castro in February 2018, Reuters reported.
Nearly 27,000 candidates are running for more than 12,500 positions in the election. The results will be announced on November 27. On that basis, Cuba's new parliament will be formed, which will choose a new president on February 24 next year.
Cuban Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel is expected to succeed Raul Castro. When he steps down as president, Raul Castro will remain First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba until 2021.
