Application of science and technology in breeding pure Brahman cows

(Baonghean.vn) - Nghe An is an agricultural province in the North Central region, with much potential and favorable conditions for developing large livestock farming.

In recent years, buffalo and cattle breeding in our province has made significant progress in quantity and quality. As of November 2017, the total herd of cattle reached 428,782, the proportion of crossbred cattle accounted for 42%. With that number, our province is one of the leading provinces in the country in terms of total herd size.

However, cattle farming in our province is not commensurate with its potential, mainly household farming, scattered on a small scale, the cattle breeds currently raised are mainly small in size, the farming efficiency is not high, there is no model of a purebred cattle farm with high productivity and quality.

It is forecasted that in the coming time, the livestock industry in general and the livestock industry in our province in particular will be greatly affected when Vietnam joins the TPP and to implement the restructuring project of the Agriculture and Rural Development sector of Nghe An province approved by the Provincial People's Committee, in the direction of increasing added value and sustainable development, the planning for the development of buffalo and cattle farming in Nghe An province for the period 2015 - 2020 has been approved by the Provincial People's Committee with the total herd structure by 2020 being: 780 thousand heads, the crossbred cattle rate reaching 60%, every year Nghe An needs to accelerate the breeding work, build and replicate models of breeding cows with high quality productivity.

From September 2016 to 2017, Nghe An Livestock Breeding Center has implemented the model of "Raising purebred Brahman cows" at the Dai Hue Investment and Trading Joint Stock Company Farm in Hamlet 7, Nghi Hung Commune (Nghi Loc), with a scale of 30 purebred Brahman cows. The cows are of the Zebu breed, originating from India, with a beautiful appearance, long body, straight back, large waist, and developed plastron. This is a tropical beef cow, widely raised in countries with subtropical temperatures, including Vietnam.

Dai Hue Investment Construction Trading Joint Stock Company, with an area of ​​over 10 hectares, has invested in a system of barns in the production area that is arranged quite systematically. The cow barn is invested in an automatic cooling system. The company utilizes drinking water for livestock from streams and streams and stores it through a source tank system. The cleaning of barns and feed troughs is carried out daily and is treated through a Biogas tank system. To have a source of food that ensures good nutrition and cleanliness for livestock, the model applies drying oven technology to produce microbial bran from grass and agricultural by-products, ensuring that the food does not contain antibiotic residues.

The breeding model is invested in accordance with technical processes, the breeding animals are selected from the Animal Husbandry Institute, the cows continue to be bred by artificial insemination (AI) with imported pure Brahman bull semen, so the calves born have a beautiful appearance and good growth and development ability.

Through the results of the model construction, farmers have received and applied new technical advances in livestock farming. Purebred Brahman cattle are adapted to the farming conditions in Nghe An, growing and developing well. However, the reality of the model shows that to achieve high economic efficiency and sustainable success for the model, it is necessary to apply technical advances, focus on breed quality and do a good job of breeding, detecting heat and mating, improving stature, investing in feed... to increase productivity and quality.
