US to use microwave weapons to counter North Korean missiles

(Baonghean.vn)- The White House has discussed testing missiles using microwave weapons against North Korea to paralyze leader Kim Jong-un's nuclear weapons and missiles.

In the event of war, the US Air Force could use a microwave weapon called CHAMP to “fry” the electronic components that control North Korea’s latest missiles, thereby preventing them from being launched.

The use of these weapons, which are not yet operational, has been discussed in White House discussions about North Korea. The microwave weapon, known as CHAMP (Counter-electronics Advanced High Power Microwave Project), is mounted on a cruise missile and could be launched from a B-52 bomber.

The weapon would have eliminated everything inside the first building it targeted, including cameras recording the test, before continuing to target five more buildings and self-destructing at a pre-determined test site. This was the only publicly known test of a microwave weapon.

Other tests are believed to have taken place to improve the weapon, including mounting it on a missile to make it harder to detect and increase its power.

A 2016 Air Force Research Laboratory document said the low-flying missile is capable of “entering enemy airspace and disabling enemy electronic systems.”
