The Pentagon on December 6 released images of the airstrike earlier this month targeting Mullah Shah Wali, commander of the "Red Unit" special forces that spread terror in Afghanistan, Sputnik reported.

In the video, the US aircraft follows a target, a car moving at high speed. The aircraft continuously fires lasers to guide the weapon, until the missile hits the target and creates a large explosion. The US Air Force said the attack killed Wali and three gunmen.

"Wali and Red Unit are responsible for a series of suicide bombings, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and attacks against civilians, Afghan government troops and coalition forces," said a spokesman for NATO's anti-Taliban operation, Resolute Support. According to General John Nicholson, commander of US forces in Afghanistan and commander of Resolute Support, Wali's death will disrupt the Taliban ranks, limit their drug trafficking activities and reduce their combat capabilities.

The Red Unit, considered the Taliban's top elite unit, is equipped with helmets fitted with Russian night vision goggles, M4 rifles fitted with US laser targeting lights and sightings of Iranian or Pakistani origin. They often travel in pickup trucks similar to those used by the Afghan police or Humvees used by the army.

On November 13 and 14 alone, Red Unit carried out five attacks in the western and southern provinces of Afghanistan, killing many government security personnel, mostly police. The Afghan government admitted that this force was better equipped than the government forces, especially the police, causing them to suffer many casualties.
