In the early morning of December 9, Mr. Ly Thien Tai (37 years old, from Ca Mau) drove a sleeper bus carrying more than 30 passengers from My Thuan bridge to Trung Luong. When reaching Dong Hoa commune (Chau Thanh, Tien Giang), the car crashed into the back of a truck carrying plastic granules parked on the side of the road.
The truck was thrown forward and hit the back of another truck that was also parked. The second truck continued to hit and break 3 electric poles on the side of the road before stopping.
The accident caused severe damage to the rear of the two trucks, while the front of the sleeper bus was deformed. Passenger Nguyen Van Dung (52 years old, from Ca Mau) sitting next to the driver died on the spot. 12 other people were injured, screaming and banging on the car doors for help. Passersby broke the windows to help the victims out.
"I and other passengers were sleeping. When I heard a loud noise, I woke up and saw the front of the car was crushed, so I shouted for everyone to find a way to escape," a passenger recounted.
