Hurricane Harvey, a Category 4 storm, made landfall in Texas on the night of August 25, with winds of up to 200 km/h, killing 60 people, forcing 1 million people to leave their homes, and destroying about 200,000 homes. Harvey is the strongest storm to hit the US in 12 years, since Hurricane Charley in 2004. The worst storm to hit the state in 50 years caused up to $180 billion in damage. The 7.3-magnitude earthquake on the evening of November 12, 2017, with its epicenter in the Iraqi city of Halabja and causing severe damage to cities and villages on the Iraq-Iran border, completely destroyed many buildings in Kermanshah province, Iran. Bangladesh is also experiencing historic flooding that has submerged about a third of its territory. On August 23, 2017, Super Typhoon Hato, with peak winds of nearly 168 km/h, made landfall in Hong Kong and Macau, China, causing flooding. In Hong Kong, more than 450 flights were canceled, financial markets were shut down, and schools were forced to close as the first Category 10 storm to hit the city since 2012. Typhoon Hato killed 18 people in the Macau Special Administrative Region and southern China. Hundreds of others were injured. |
