In 2018, Ho Chi Minh City National University plans to organize an aptitude test for member schools to consider recruiting a portion of their quota. This is a new enrollment method, in addition to the enrollment methods that have been applied since 2017.

Change the admission process

Dr. Duong Ton Thai Duong - Deputy Head of University Training Department (VNU-HCMC) - said that schools will use part of the quota to select students based on this result. However, this plan is still being discussed by schools and is expected to be officially announced in early January 2018.

Regarding the proposal to remove the regulation requiring candidates to achieve a minimum preliminary score of 6.5 (average score of 3 years of high school), Mr. Duong said that this was a proposal of the University of Economics and Law, not a common opinion of the schools.

Meanwhile, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh - Director of the Center for Testing and Training Quality Assessment of Ho Chi Minh City National University - said that preparations for this exam such as the question bank, the way the exam is organized... have been carefully and scientifically prepared.

According to information from member schools, the quota for admission based on the ability assessment test will not be much. Most schools plan to reserve 10-20% of their quota for admission using this method.

Dr. Pham Tan Ha - Vice Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - said that if this admission method is applied, the school will only enroll students in majors with high admission scores in previous years. The University of Natural Sciences also plans to only enroll students in majors with high admission scores that attract candidates.

According to Dr. Le Chi Thong - Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (VNU-HCM), the school's 2018 enrollment plan has some changes compared to last year. The industrial maintenance major is being considered by VNU-HCM to be upgraded to a university and is expected to enroll students in 2018.

In addition, some majors that are recruited by groups will be separated into separate groups. In particular, majors in the transportation engineering group including automobile engineering technology, marine engineering and aviation engineering will be recruited separately, with their own benchmarks, without determining the benchmarks by group as before.

Thermal engineering was also separated from the mechanical engineering group to determine its own benchmark.

MSc. Nguyen Van Duong - Deputy Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics - said that in 2018, the school will have some changes in admission methods. Accordingly, the school will enroll all majors separately, instead of enrolling by major group as before, each major will have its own standard score.

Add new majors, change admission combinations

MSc. Nguyen Van Duong said that this year the school will add the D07 combination (math - chemistry - English) to most majors, and remove the D90 combination (math - English - natural sciences). According to Mr. Duong, the number of candidates applying for admission using the D90 combination in 2017 was too small, so the school decided not to enroll students using this combination anymore.

Similarly, the University of Economics and Law (VNU-HCM) will also remove the combination of math - English - natural sciences because the number of candidates for admission is not large.

According to Mr. Pham Thai Son - Deputy Director of the Admissions and Training Services Center of Ho Chi Minh City University of Food Industry, the school's admission plan remains the same as in 2017. Regarding the admission combination, this year the school will have a big change. Accordingly, all admission combinations of the school will include English.

“The combination of math - physics - chemistry will be changed to math - chemistry - English, math - literature - natural science will be changed to math - English - natural science. Thus, a major can recruit many combinations, but each combination has English in it.

Regarding enrollment quotas, there has not been a final decision on whether to determine quotas by industry or total quotas, so the school still has to wait," Mr. Son added.

Also in this year's enrollment period, many universities have begun enrolling new majors. Among them, Ho Chi Minh City University of Culture plans to enroll three new majors including tourism, hotel management, restaurant management and food service.

The University of Transport has opened three new majors: construction management, hydraulic engineering and applied mathematics. Meanwhile, the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education is enrolling students in five new majors: renewable energy, graphic design, architecture, construction management, and restaurant management. The home economics major has also been changed to women's engineering.

Associate Professor Dr. Le Hoang Nghiem - Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Natural Resources and Environment - said that the school's enrollment plan remains stable as in 2017 but will recruit two new majors. Those are mineral resources management and integrated water resources management, recruiting groups A, A1, B and D1.

According to Dr. My Giang Son - Head of Training Department of Saigon University, the school will have an additional major in English pedagogy (university level) for primary school. "This major has a very high demand, but in previous years, the list of level 4 major codes did not have major codes for both university and college levels.

This year, the new major code only has one English pedagogy major code, so the school divided this major into three English pedagogy majors for high school, middle school and elementary school. Candidates will be considered for admission to the major right from the beginning, instead of having to study for a while before being assigned to the major" - Mr. Son said.

“New bottle, old wine”

According to the new industry code list of the Ministry of Education and Training, the list of training industries will have 105 new industries. There are completely new industries, industry codes and names such as tourism, urban architectural heritage conservation, interior architecture, health organization and management... while many other new industries are just adjustments to the names of existing industries.

Dr. Pham Tan Ha said that from 2018, the tourism and travel services management industry will officially enroll students under the name tourism industry.

According to Mr. Ha, in previous years the school proposed the name and code for the tourism major, but because there was no level 4 major code for this major, the school had to enroll students under the name tourism and travel services management.

“Although the name has changed, the training program of this industry and the majors remain the same, there is no change. Students will be trained in three majors: tour guide, travel management and restaurant - hotel - resort management,” Mr. Ha added.
