Former US ambassador to the UN calls on President Trump to attack North Korea soon

(Baonghean.vn) - Former US Ambassador to the United Nations (UN), Mr. John Bolton, said that President Donald Trump needs to soon order an attack on North Korea to eliminate the country's nuclear threat.

Mr Bolton admitted there was a great risk that hundreds of thousands of South Koreans would be put in danger if neighboring North Korea retaliated against any US military action.

However, the former US ambassador to the UN said that President Trump cannot ignore this threat any longer, because there is no sign that Pyongyang's military ambitions will end.

According to Mr. Bolton, no one wants World War III to break out, but he affirmed: "The first duty of the US President is to protect the American people. At some point, you need to choose between which is the greater risk, preventing North Korea from gaining blackmail capabilities or preventing it from launching an actual attack on the United States given the risks and consequences of a preemptive attack."

Mr. Bolton also strongly criticized failed efforts to persuade the government of leader Kim Jong-un to negotiate, stressing that the time for dialogue was almost over.

The former official also warned that Pyongyang could sell lethal weapons to other authoritarian regimes like Iran, thereby shifting the threat to the West. Bolton also dismissed claims that North Korea could be contained with Cold War-style tactics.

Previously, Mr. Bolton warned that the US needed to destroy Pyongyang's military capabilities after the Northeast Asian country test-launched a ballistic missile capable of reaching the US mainland in late November./.
