Messi sets record of 5 times winning La Liga's best player award

Marca (Spain) presented the La Liga 2016-2017 season awards to Lionel Messi, Jan Oblak and Iago Aspas.

Messi wins La Liga top scorer and best player awards. The La Liga Best Player Award is also called the "Alfredo Di Stefano Award" - a legendary compatriot of Messi's but played for Real Madrid during the period 1953-1964.

This is the fifth time Messi has won the La Liga Best Player award - an unprecedented feat. The Barca forward has surpassed the previous record he held with Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi won the award in 2008-2009, 2009-2010, 2010-2011 and 2014-2015, while Ronaldo won in 2011-2012, 2012-2013, 2013-2014 and 2015-2016.

The other winner was Raul Gonzalez, a former Real Madrid striker. The award was voted for and presented by Marca starting in the 2007-2008 season.

The award for Best Goalkeeper of the 2016-2017 season went to Jan Oblak, the goalkeeper of Atletico Madrid.While the Golden Boot went to Messi, the Spanish Player with the most goals award went to Iago Aspas (Celta Vigo).

Mendilibar (Eibar) and Garitano (Leganes) were both awarded the best coach award. Martinez Munuera was awarded the best referee award, while Andres Iniesta was named the best Spanish player.
