"They discussed their views on recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, agreed on the importance of the US in making new proposals for peace and the international community supporting these efforts," AFP quoted a spokesman for the British Prime Minister's Office as saying about the phone call between Prime Minister Theresa May and US President Donald Trump on December 19.

"The President and Prime Minister discussed next steps in achieving peace in the Middle East," the White House said. "The two leaders exchanged Christmas and New Year greetings."

Mr. Trump and Mrs. May also mentioned the situation in Yemen and the process of negotiating the UK's withdrawal from the European Union (EU), aka Brexit. The UK announced that they "agreed on a bilateral trade deal after Brexit". The US side did not mention this agreement.

The call came nearly a month after Mr Trump and Mrs May engaged in a Twitter spat over the US president's retweeting of an anti-Islamic post by the deputy leader of the far-right Britain First party.

On December 18, the UK was one of 14 Security Council member countries that voted in favor of a resolution criticizing Trump for recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. This is a move that goes against US policy for many years and has faced strong opposition from Palestine as well as the international community.
