The Western "lover" they met online promised to send gifts and money for engagement and wedding expenses, so the ladies quickly sent tens of millions of dong to the "lover's" account to pay the fees.

On December 19, the People's Court of Ho Chi Minh City tried the defendants Le Dung Tuyen (30 years old, residing in Hau Giang province) and Tran Thuyen Ly (28 years old, residing in Tien Giang) for the crime of "Fraudulent appropriation of property".

According to the investigation, through social networks, Samson (unknown origin) and some Nigerians created email and Facebook addresses to chat and get to know many Vietnamese women.

After a period of talking and gaining trust with Vietnamese women, these foreign men expressed their desire to come to Vietnam to live and get married.

To create more trust, they promise to send money and gifts to Vietnam as engagement gifts and take care of the wedding and marriage procedures. However, these “fiancés” require the “wives” to pay a fee to receive the gifts and money.

Next, Samson asked Ly to open two bank accounts to receive money from the gullible women. Ly asked Tuyen to open the accounts and agreed to keep 10% of the total amount of money the victims deposited into the accounts to share.

Accordingly, in less than a year, Tuyen and Ly helped Samson appropriate nearly 800 million VND from gullible victims. However, these two defendants only received 34 million VND, the rest was given to Samson.

In addition, there are 16 other victims who transferred hundreds of millions of dong into Tuyen's account but did not report it, so the prosecution agency has not been able to handle it.

Previously, on November 6, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court opened the trial. However, defendant Ly stated that his health was not good, he could not answer the questions of the panel of judges and he wanted to invite a lawyer to defend him, so he asked the panel of judges to postpone the trial. After consideration, the panel of judges accepted defendant Ly's request.

In this trial, both defendants continued to be without lawyers.

Faced with documentary evidence, both Tuyen and Ly bowed their heads and admitted their crimes. After consideration, the panel sentenced Tuyen to 5 years in prison and Ly to 3 years in prison, but with suspended sentences.
