The Ka-28 helicopter squadron of the 954th Naval Aviation Brigade and the Petya frigate of the 171st Brigade recently conducted a coordinated anti-submarine operation.

Currently, the main anti-submarine warfare force of the Vietnam People's Navy includes the Petya frigate squadron under Brigade 171 and the Ka-28 helicopter squadron under Brigade 954.

Recently, the two types of vehicles had a rare joint training session offshore. Images of this activity were recorded by Vietnam National Defense Television Channel.

The Vietnamese Navy received a total of five Petya frigates - Project 159 from the Soviet Union, including three Petya IIs and two Petya IIIs in the early 1980s.

The Petya class was the first class of gas turbine-powered battleships of the Soviet Navy. Their role was anti-submarine warfare in shallow waters.

Basic specifications: Standard displacement 950 tons, full load 1,150 tons; length 81.8 m; width 9.2 m; draft 2.9 m; crew 90 people.

The ship is equipped with a mixture of 2 gas turbine engines and 1 diesel engine with a total capacity of 36,000 horsepower, for a maximum speed of 30 knots; a range of 4,870 nautical miles when running at a speed of 10 knots or 450 nautical miles when running at maximum speed.

Petya's electronic system includes Don-2 radar, Slim Net, Hawk Screech, Herkules built-in sonar and immersion sonar.

The weapons of the Vietnamese Petya ships include 2 AK-726 twin-barreled 76 mm guns; 2 RBU-600 anti-submarine rocket launchers; 10 SET-40UE anti-submarine torpedo tubes (on Petya II) or 5 SET-53M anti-submarine - surface ship torpedo tubes (on Petya III).

The Ka-28 is an export version of the Ka-27 Helix, an anti-submarine helicopter produced by Kamov for the Soviet Navy. Design work on the Ka-27 began in 1970 and was completed in 1973.

Like many other Kamov helicopters, the Ka-27 has a configuration of 2 coaxial rotors that cancel out rotational torque, so it does not need a tail rotor, making it very convenient to place on the flight deck of a warship.

The Ka-28 helicopter has a crew of 2 - 3 people; length 11.3 m; rotor diameter 2 x 15.8 m; height 5.5 m; empty weight 6,500 kg, loaded 11,100 kg, maximum take-off weight 12,000 kg.

The aircraft is equipped with 2 Isotov TV3-117V engines with a capacity of 1,660 kW (2,230 shp) each for a maximum speed of 270 km/h, a range of 980 km, and a ceiling of 5,000 m.

The Ka-28's payload capacity is up to 4,000 kg of external weapons including depth bombs, torpedoes and anti-submarine rockets. The Ka-28's special equipment is the VGS-3 immersion sonar and sonar buoys.

It is expected that in the near future, the Vietnamese Navy will begin deploying the second pair of Gepard 3.9 missile frigates with anti-submarine capabilities and in the future, there is a prospect of receiving the P-3C Orion aircraft, which will provide superior combat capabilities compared to the present.
