Five months after throwing a traffic police lieutenant who was clinging to the mirror off the road, the container truck driver had to appear in court.

The verdict of the Ha Tinh People's Court on December 26 determined that at around 4:00 p.m. on June 30, Phan Thanh Hung (22 years old) carried a class FC driver's license under the fake name Luu Van Chau while driving a tractor-trailer on National Highway 1A in the South-North direction.

The car was carrying Tu Cong Tho (44 years old, residing in Phu My district, Binh Dinh). When reaching the section passing through Vuong Loc commune (Can Loc, Ha Tinh), the car was asked to stop by the patrol team of the Traffic Police Department of Ha Tinh Public Security for speeding.

Driver Hung then did not show any documents, explaining that the container truck's monitoring device had reported no speeding violation. After saying that, Hung got into the car and sat down. About 3 minutes later, Hung drove the car towards the police.First Lieutenant Le Ho Viet Anh avoided in time, while First Lieutenant Nguyen Anh Duc quickly clung to the front mirror of the car.

According to the accusation, for more than 200 meters, the driver continuously swerved, causing Mr. Duc to fall onto the road, hit the median strip, causing a traumatic brain injury and a broken leg. His health was damaged by 40%.

When the traffic police in a special vehicle chased him, Hung barricaded himself in the cabin, causing traffic congestion on Highway 1A. The authorities had to use many persuasive measures before the driver came down to show up.

At the investigation agency, Hung stated that Tho hired him to work as a driver's assistant. Seeing that Hung could drive a tractor but was not old enough to get a FC license, in February 2017, Tho used Hung's photo to hire someone to make a fake FC license under the name of Luu Van Chau for 2.5 million VND.

According to authorities, in April, Hung drove a container truck and violated the law by turning without a turn signal in Quang Ngai and used a fake driver's license to deceive the police.

At the trial this morning, defendant Hung cried, admitting that a moment of anger and lack of self-control had caused unfortunate consequences. Defendant Tho explained that he made the fake certificate to show off to his friends, not to deal with the authorities.

The jury assessed that Hung’s actions disregarded the lives of others, and that the victim was lucky not to die. As for Tho, his forged credentials and dishonest statements made it difficult for the investigation agency to make procedural decisions.

The court sentenced Hung to 8 years in prison for murder and 2 years in prison for forging documents of an agency or organization, for a total of 10 years in prison. Tho was sentenced to 2 years in prison for forging documents of an agency or organization.
