Refused to renew with Chelsea, Hazard & Courtois wait for Real
Chelsea are facing the risk of losing two of their most important players to Real Madrid at the same time. Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois seem to be heading to the Santiago Bernabeu.
Hazard refuses to renew to wait for Real
“I can confirm that Eden has turned down a contract extension with Chelsea. There has been no contact with Real Madrid at the moment, but I know that is also where Eden wants to play,” Thierry Hazard, the Belgian player’s father, told Le Soir.
Mr. Thierry's revelation confirmed the worries of the Chelsea Board of Directors and fans. Hazard no longer wants to stay at Stamford Bridge for a long time, especially when he is always desired by Real coach Zinedine Zidane. But how many football players are brave enough to refuse the opportunity to wear the shirt of the most successful team in La Liga and the C1 Cup/Champions League?
The British press said that right after entering the new year 2018, Chelsea will officially open negotiations to extend Hazard's contract. The Belgian star midfielder is too important to The Blues' playing style. Hazard can play on the wing and can also play well in the attacking midfield position behind striker Alvaro Morata. It is difficult to imagine a Chelsea without Hazard in the near future.
Although Hazard's desire to leave is no longer a rumor, Chelsea will certainly not easily let go of the Belgian midfielder. However, it is not certain that the West London team can take strong action in the case of goalkeeper Courtois.
Courtois is also waiting for Real
Hazard’s compatriot, goalkeeper Courtois, is also looking to Real. Negotiations for a contract extension with Courtois have been difficult for a long time due to the Belgian goalkeeper’s lack of cooperation. Hazard’s contract with Chelsea runs until 2020, but Courtois’ contract with Stamford Bridge is only valid until 2019.
That means that if Courtois has not signed a new contract by the summer of 2018, he will enter the final year of his contract with Chelsea next season. If Chelsea do not sell Courtois soon, no matter how talented the goalkeeper is, they will have to accept losing Courtois for a much cheaper price than his value.
Of course, Courtois does not have as big an impact on Chelsea's play as Hazard. So Chelsea are also reacting rather weakly to the news that the Belgian goalkeeper wants to leave. Yesterday, coach Antonio Conte also only said that he hopes Courtois will stay, despite the fact that the goalkeeper's two children are living in Madrid with his ex-girlfriend Marta Dominguez.
Through the rather polite statement of Coach Conte, it can be guessed that Chelsea will not be determined to keep Courtois. And if Real really wants Courtois, then Los Blanco has no reason to worry that this goalkeeper will refuse!
In the past 50 years, there has not been a Belgian player at Real. Not counting young goalkeeper Alex Craninx who was sold by Real to Sparta Rotterdam in the summer of 2017, there has only been one Belgian player to play for Real, former striker Fernand Goyvaerts (who passed away in 2004). Since Goyvaerts left Real in 1967, it has been half a century since any Belgian player has played at least one match for the Spanish Royal team. |
