500-year-old banyan tree in Nghe An honored as "Century Ancient Tree"
(Baonghean.vn) - The Vietnam Record Council has just awarded the title "Century Ancient Tree" to a 500-year-old fig tree at the Temple of Hoang Giap, Minister of the Ministry of Finance, National University Te Tuu, Xuan Quan Cong, and Superior Guardian Ngo Tri in Dien Ky commune, Dien Chau district.

The awarding ceremony was held on the morning of January 7, in Dien Ky commune, Dien Chau district, to commemorate the 392nd anniversary of the death of Hoang Giap, Minister of the Ministry of Housing, National University Rector, Xuan Quan Cong, and Supreme Guardian Ngo Tri. Attending the ceremony was Mr. Le Doan Hop - Chairman of the Vietnam Record Establishment Council.
Ngo Tri Hoa, the Minister of the Ministry of Finance, the National University's Te Tuu, the Duke of Xuan, and the Superior General of the Royal Guard, was a famous mandarin during the Later Le Dynasty. During his more than 30 years as an official, Ngo Tri Hoa held many important positions in the royal court. His name was recorded in history books with many achievements such as giving advice to the king, repelling foreign invaders, and helping the country to be at peace... When he passed away, King Le Than Tong ordered the construction of a temple to worship him in his hometown in Ly Trai village, Dien Ky commune, Dien Chau district.
Along with the record setting of the event of father and son studying in the same class in 2013, at the anniversary of Ngo Tri Hoa's death this year, the descendants of the Ngo family continued to be honored by the Vietnam Record Organization to set the "Century of Ancient Trees" for the 500-year-old fig tree in the temple grounds.
The tree is 21m high and 1.6m in diameter. It has great cultural and historical value and has become a living witness to many revolutionary events in Dien Chau.

Also at the ceremony, the Vietnam Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Group presented 50 gifts to people in Dien Ky commune with difficult circumstances and poor students overcoming difficulties of Ngo Tri Hoa High School, each gift worth 1 million VND.
