The tragic death of an 11th grade male student: The ringleader received 8 years in prison
The provincial People's Court has just opened the first instance trial of 4 defendants (all residing in Huong Son district) after the attack that led to the death of an 11th grade student in November 2016.
On the morning of January 7, a source from the People's Court of Ha Tinh province said that the People's Court of this province had just opened a first-instance trial of 4 defendants including: Nguyen Phi Long (born 2000, residing in Son Binh commune, 11th grade student at Le Huu Trac High School) and 3 subjects: Tran Huy Duc (born 2000, residing in Son Chau commune), Phan Cao Trong (born 2000, residing in Son Ha commune), Nguyen Hong Son (born 1996, residing in Son My commune, both in Huong Son district) for the crime of "Murder".
According to the indictment, because of a conflict on social networks, at about 9:00 a.m. on November 24, 2016, Nguyen Phi Long invited Tran Huy Duc, Phan Cao Trong, and Nguyen Hong Son to Ly Chinh Thang High School (Huong Son district) to find Le Manh Quyen (11th grade student) to "talk".
Victim Quyen lived a vegetative life for days after being attacked by Long's group.
Upon arriving, even though Trong, Son and Duc advised him to only hit Quyen lightly because he knew him, Long still ignored them. Long took his nunchaku and went into the classroom to meet Quyen, then used the nunchaku to hit the victim on the head, causing him to collapse. Not satisfied, Long continued to grab the victim's hair and punch him two more times.
Long and his accomplices only retreated after seeing a lot of blood flowing from Quyen's head.
The victim was then taken to the hospital by his friends for emergency treatment. Test results showed that Quyen was brain dead and had suffered 100% health damage. Despite his family's best efforts to treat him, after more than a year of living in a vegetative state, Quyen died on the morning of November 24, 2017.
At the trial, the panel of judges determined that the defendants’ actions were dangerous, disregarded the law, and were determined to take the lives of others. Defendant Long was said to be the mastermind, and the other three defendants played supporting roles.
Long and his accomplices were brought to court.
After considering the circumstances, the panel sentenced Long to 8 years in prison for “Murder”; Trong, Son and Duc each received 2 years in prison for the same crime. Defendants Long and Duc had mitigating circumstances because they were minors, and Son and Trong’s families had contributed to the revolution.
In addition, the defendants must also compensate the victim's family 380 million VND, of which defendant Long must compensate 209 million VND, and the remaining 3 defendants must each compensate 57 million VND.
