On January 8, answering a reporter's question about Vietnam's reaction to some moves to resume dialogue between North Korea and South Korea, Vietnamese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang said:

“Vietnam welcomes and supports measures related to the situation on the Korean peninsula to promote dialogue and maintain peace and stability in the region; calls on parties to continue taking constructive and practical actions to contribute to maintaining peace, security and stability in the region and the world."

Previously, the South Korean Unification Ministry said the two sides agreed to start negotiations at 10 a.m. on January 9 (local time) at the Panmunjeom truce village on the border between the two sides.

Unification Ministry spokesman Baik Tae Hyun said the two sides agreed on the time for the talks on the afternoon of January 7. A key topic to be discussed at the talks is North Korea's participation in the Winter Olympics, which will take place from February 9 to 25.

South Korean Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyo said that at high-level talks with North Korea on January 9, the South Korean side will seek to discuss ways to ease military tensions on the Korean Peninsula and the issue of reuniting families separated by the war.

Mr. Cho, also the head of the South Korean delegation, stated: "Basically, the two sides will focus on the Olympic Games. When discussing inter-Korean relations, the South Korean side will raise the issue of families separated by war, as well as ways to ease military tensions"./.
