(Baonghean.vn) - Chaos, disorder, environmental pollution, and the constant risk of fire and explosions… are the common conditions at scrap collection and trading points in Dien Hong commune (Dien Chau district).

According to statistics, Dien Hong commune has about 20 scrap metal businesses, concentrated in a "scrap metal village" located next to National Highway 1A. Photo: Thanh Cuong
Hundreds of types of scrap materials, from cars, water pumps, and televisions to plastic bags, chicken feathers, and duck feathers, are collected from various places and piled up in yards at these scrap yards. Photo: Thanh Cuong
The scrap metal here is piled up into small mountains, so much so that excavators are needed to dig and sort it... Photo: Thanh Cuong
Besides common scrap materials like scrap iron and plastic bags, other types of scrap materials with high fire and explosion risks, those that can cause environmental pollution, or those that are prohibited, such as gas cylinders and bomb casings, are also collected here. Photo: Thanh Cuong
Discarded batteries are hazardous waste that can easily cause environmental pollution and are readily found in scrap yards. Photo: Thanh Cuong
Welding and metal cutting work takes place daily, right on top of piles of flammable scrap metal. Fires and explosions can occur at any time. Photo: Thanh Cuong
According to statistics, five accidents related to cutting flammable and explosive scrap metal have occurred in Dien Hong commune, including three at scrap metal businesses and two among residents. (Photo: Thanh Cuong)
Scrap metal collection and purchasing points not only cause environmental pollution and detract from urban aesthetics, but also pose significant fire and explosion hazards. Therefore, in addition to commitments signed with local authorities, the level of safety in the operation of these facilities depends entirely on the knowledge and self-awareness of the operators themselves.
