As Business Insider reports, the ship left Buffalo on December 20. It was planned to stop briefly in Montreal after a week of sailing, and then head to Halifax. However, it could not continue — the USS Little Rock was stuck in ice. In addition, the port did not have enough tugboats.
US Navy public affairs spokeswoman Courtney Hillson confirmed that the ship will remain in the port of Montreal until the weather improves.
Temperatures in Montreal and the surrounding area were below normal, close to historic records for cold weather in December, Hillson said.
The Freedom-class warship USS Little Rock is designed to operate in coastal and shallow waters. According to US media, the US Navy plans to use the ship in shallow waters around the Pacific Rim.
