On January 23, Nghe An Provincial Police Department’s Environmental Police inspected a fresh bamboo shoot processing facility in Tan Hoa block, Vinh Tan ward, Vinh city. There, the authorities discovered 18 tons of fresh bamboo shoots and 2 boxes of white powder.

The owner of the facility is Mr. Ho Khac Ngoc Tan (born in 1991, residing in Tan Hoa block, Vinh Tan ward, Vinh city). Mr. Tan could not present documents stating the origin of the above bamboo shoots.

According to Mr. Tan’s statement, the bamboo shoots were imported from traders in Western Nghe An, and the two boxes of white powder were sugar bleach. After bringing them back, the owner of the facility soaked the bamboo shoots in sugar bleach to clean them.

After that, the bamboo shoots are sold in Vinh market and neighboring districts. Every day, this facility sells more than 500 kg of bamboo shoots to the market.

Sugar bleaching agent is mainly used to reduce insoluble vat dyes to soluble form in alkaline solution for dyeing cellulose fabrics. Sugar bleaching agent can also be used for bleaching silk and supplementary bleaching of cotton fabrics.

In addition, sugar bleach is also used to wash away some types of dyes on fabrics after dyeing, clean dyeing machines or in processes that require color removal (for disperse dyes, direct dyes and insoluble azo dyes...).
