Female "tycoon" of Nghe An mountain town swindles 25 billion VND from nearly 400 people
(Baonghean.vn) - Under the guise of a gold and motorbike business owner, Nguyen Thi Thao (born in 1959, residing in Con Cuong town, Nghe An) mobilized deposits from hundreds of people at high interest rates. Then, she appropriated this money.

Nghe An Provincial People's Procuracy has just completed the indictment to prosecute and bring to court defendant Nguyen Thi Thao for the crime of "Fraudulent appropriation of property".
Nguyen Thi Thao was temporarily detained by the Investigation Police Agency of Con Cuong District Police on December 23, 2017 to investigate and clarify the act of fraud and property appropriation.
Searching the suspect's residence, the police seized 12 kg of gold and silver metals; 8 motorbikes and some foreign currency.
The investigation agency clarified that as the owner of a famous gold and motorbike trading business in Con Cuong district town, Ms. Thao expanded into the field of receiving deposits for people.
People who deposit money with Ms. Thao will be paid interest of 1,000 VND/1 million/1 month. The depositor will be given a receipt with the signature and red seal of the business run by Ms. Thao.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thao’s deposit-taking activities began in 2009, until the day this woman was arrested by the police. The investigation agency determined that the amount of money Ms. Thao appropriated from the victims was up to 25 billion VND. Ms. Thao’s victims mainly lived in the two districts of Anh Son and Con Cuong.

When Ms. Thao was arrested, more than 500 people came forward to report that they were victims of the fraud and property appropriation directed by her. However, based on the investigation process and the evidence collected, the investigation agency determined that there were 383 victims. In addition, the investigation agency also identified 4 people with rights and obligations related to this case.
Previously, on May 9, 2016, Nguyen Thi Thao was also arrested by Nghe An Provincial Police on charges of gambling and lottery betting and was sentenced to 7 months of suspended imprisonment by Con Cuong District People's Court.
