Yonhap news agency quoted multiple South Korean officials as saying that President Moon Jae-in may meet with North Korean President Kim Yong-nam when he visits South Korea to attend the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics this week, but it has not yet been decided whether the two will hold separate meetings.
However, it is necessary to discuss with the North Korean advance team whether Mr. Kim will pay a separate visit to President Moon.”
Another official from the agency also said it had not yet been decided whether Mr. Moon would meet Mr. Kim privately.
Meanwhile, another official was quoted as saying that there has been no specific request from North Korea for a meeting with Mr. Moon, but Pyongyang's decision to send Mr. Kim to the Olympics was out of goodwill.
“The upcoming visit of the North Korean National Assembly Chairman is not only a message to South Korea but also a message to other countries,” the official said.
On the night of February 4, North Korea announced that Mr. Kim will visit South Korea from February 9-11 as head of a high-level delegation to the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
Mr. Kim is expected to attend the opening ceremony, a match of the joint women's ice hockey team of the two Koreas on February 10 and a performance by a North Korean art troupe in Seoul on February 11.
