According to the decree, the FSO can conduct operations on "information warfare, detecting, preventing and eliminating the consequences of computer attacks on information resources of the Russian Federation."

In addition, the agency is also responsible for protecting the personal data of senior government officials and their family members.

The latest doctrine on information security of the Russian Federation, introduced in late 2016, stated that other countries are stepping up efforts to influence Russia's internal affairs, conducting cyber attacks against Moscow's key infrastructure.

To counter threats and challenges in the information environment, Russia will build “strategic shields” and strive to “prevent armed conflicts originating from the use of information technologies” as well as neutralize psychological campaigns aimed at “historical foundations and patriotic values.”

Russia will also strengthen its critical information infrastructure to counter cyber and computer attacks.
