Nghe An wins 2 prestigious awards from the Vietnam Mathematical Society

(Baonghean.vn) - The Vietnam Mathematical Association has just announced the list of teachers and students who have been awarded the Le Van Thiem Prize. This year, Nghe An is honored to have 2 people awarded this prize, namely teacher Le Xuan Son - Vice Principal of Vinh University High School for the Gifted and student Nguyen Canh Hoang - former student of class 12 A1, Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted.

The Le Van Thiem Award is a traditional award of the Vietnam Mathematical Association and is awarded annually to outstanding teachers and students who have made many contributions to the field of Mathematics in Vietnam. Usually, each year, the award is given to 1-2 high school math teachers and 2-4 high school students.

In 2018, the Le Van Thiem Award for Teachers was presented to Mr. Le Xuan Son - Vice Principal of Vinh University High School for the Gifted. He has 25 years of experience teaching Mathematics at Vinh University High School for the Gifted and is a Doctor of Mathematics majoring in Analysis. This is the second teacher from Nghe An to be honored with this award.

During his career, he directly taught many students who won prizes in the Nghe An province's excellent student competitions and 11 students won first and second prizes in the National Excellent Student Competition. In addition, 4 students won Gold and Silver medals in the National High School Math Olympiad and 3 students won International Math Olympiad medals in 2006, 2008 and 2013.

From 2013 to 2017, he chaired the organization of Summer Schools and Winter Schools on General Mathematics for students of specialized high schools in the North Central region (from Thanh Hoa to Hue), contributing significantly to improving the region's mathematics achievements in recent years.

Along with teacher Le Xuan Son, in 2018, Nguyen Canh Hoang, a former student of class 12 A1, Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted, was also honored to receive this award. In the 2016-2017 school year, Hoang was the first student from Nghe An to win a Gold Medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad. Currently, Hoang is a student of the Faculty of Information Technology, Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

Professor Le Van Thiem (1918-1991) was the first President of the Vietnam Mathematical Society. He was a famous mathematician who made great contributions to the research and application of mathematics. He was also one of the founders of university education in our country and a teacher of many generations of Vietnamese mathematicians.

The Le Van Thiem Award was established by the Vietnam Mathematical Society to recognize the outstanding achievements of teachers and high school students who have overcome difficulties to teach and learn Mathematics well, and to encourage students to delve into the subject which plays a particularly important role in the long-term development of the country's science. The Le Van Thiem Award is also a recognition of the contributions of Professor Le Van Thiem, a great mathematician and a teacher who has devoted himself to the cause of education.
