Vietnamese dentist on the US aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson

Lieutenant Colonel Hien Trinh has served in the US Navy for 16 years and is currently in charge of dentistry on the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, which is visiting Vietnam.

Mr. Hien, 45 years old, was born in Saigon, immigrated to the US with his parents and 5 siblings when he was only 2 years old, according toRated RedAfter drifting at sea on a fishing boat, his family was picked up by a US Navy ship and moved to East Lansing, Michigan.

Mr. Hien became a dentist serving in the US Navy for many years. He worked on three small Navy ships before becoming a dentist.in charge of caredental care for the crew on the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson.He is part of a group of American soldiers who will visit Da Nang Bay to pay a friendship visit to Vietnam from today until March 9.

“It’s great to be a dentist on this ship. I think this is the best job I’ve ever had,” Hien said in a 2016 interview. “I have great patients, supervisors who are always very supportive when I need them. Most importantly, I can pursue dentistry the way I want.”

According to92131 MagazineMr. Hien's wife is Evelyne Vu Tien, a pediatrician, also of Vietnamese origin, born in Paris, France.pressure and raised in San Francisco Bay Area, California.

The two met through a group of mutual friends. During a volunteer trip to provide dental care to orphans in Vietnam, they visited their families and discovered that their parents had been neighbors in Hanoi and had many mutual friends.

Not long after, the two were married.They currently have two daughters, Reagan Mai Trinh, 8 years old, and Josephine Trinh, 5 years old,settle downin San Diego, California.

The doctor couple is always willing to help people who do not have the opportunity to have dental care. "Before having children, I"We've volunteered in Vietnam, Mexico and other places where dentistry is underdeveloped," says Evelyne. She currently represents the American Dental Association in local schools and is involved with the children's dental care charity TeamSmile.

This Vietnamese family enjoys hiking, indoor rock climbing, visiting zoos... "My husband enjoys cooking and I enjoy playing with the kids," said Mr. Hien's wife.

Evelyne said her husband was often away from home with the US Navy, and during those times she received support from her parents, neighbors, and the surrounding community.
