The country's beer output in 2017 reached over 4 billion liters, an increase of 260,000 liters (equivalent to 6%) compared to 2016.

This information was provided by Mr. Nguyen Van Viet, Chairman of the Association.Beer, alcohol, and beverage (VBA) said at the recent summary conference.

With beer consumption data reaching more than 4 billion liters in 2017, on average each Vietnamese person drank nearly 45 liters of beer in 2017, an increase of one and a half times compared to 2 years ago. Also tAccording to the development plan of the beer, alcohol and beverage industry in Vietnam, the target set by the beer industry is to produce 4.1 billion liters of beer by 2020, meaning that each Vietnamese person will drink about 43 liters a year on average. With 2017 data, the consumption rate is close to the target number for the next 4 years.

Contributing the most to the national beer consumption in 2017 was Saigon Beer, Alcohol and Beverage Corporation (Sabeco) with 1.77 billion liters (up 6.6%), while the output of the second largest domestic beer enterprise in the market - Hanoi Beer, Alcohol and Beverage Corporation (Habeco) decreased by 6.5%, reaching 657.6 million liters. The remaining market share belongs to foreign beer enterprises and other small and medium enterprises.Beer production and trading enterprises have paid 50,000 billion VND to the budget, double that of 3 years ago.

Although beer production has increased, according to the Chairman of VBA, the beer market growth rate is only 2/3 compared to 2016. However, the attractiveness of this industry has not decreased for foreign enterprises. The most specific evidence is the successful sale of 51% of State capital in Sabeco to a Thai owner, earning nearly 5 billion USD for the national budget.

Mr. Viet also acknowledged that 2018 will be a year of tough competition for domestic beer businesses in the face of the "invasion" of foreign beer giants in the market.

The development goal of Vietnam's beer industry will achieve output4.1 billion liters of beer in the next 4 years and will increase to 4.6 billion liters of beer in 2025; 5.6 billion liters in 2035. Thus, in the next 2 decades, the amount of beer produced will increase by 1.5 times compared to the figure of more than 4 billion liters in 2017.
