Russian soldiers are 'human shields' preventing the US from attacking Syria?
What is the hidden meaning behind the statement of the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Army about retaliating if the lives of Russian soldiers are threatened?
Recently, Mr. Valery Gerasimov made the strongest statement ever, that in case the lives of Russian soldiers are threatened, the Russian armed forces will respond with certain measures against "missiles" as well as their "launchers".
The statement has raised questions among some regional observers as it is rather puzzling. Why would Russia issue such a warning when its soldiers are not the target of US military attacks?
It should be recalled that previously, Nikki Haley, US Ambassador to the United Nations, warned that Washington was ready to act in Syria to end chemical attacks, meaning that if airstrikes were carried out, the target of US bombs would only be the Syrian government army.
Russian soldiers operate in Syria as base guards and battlefield scouts. |
So is it true that Russian soldiers have actually participated in the battle in the Syrian Government Army formation and not just provided fire support as before, which is why the above statement was made? This possibility is possible but very low because Moscow's military policy still favors the use of Wagner mercenaries.
However, it should be noted that Russian Spetnaz special forces are responsible for protecting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as well as a number of high-ranking generals because of concerns that local forces will find it difficult to complete the task well.
Recently, there has been speculation that the US-led coalition, along with Israel, may use all-out force to bomb Bashar al-Assad's residence in an attempt to assassinate the leader, drawing Russia and other related countries into unpredictable new developments.
It is not difficult to recognize the silhouettes of Russian soldiers surrounding the Syrian President. |
By sending special forces to protect high-ranking Syrian officials, in addition to ensuring better security, Russia also "warns" the US and its allies that their bombing will be a direct attack on Russian soldiers, which will inevitably lead to retaliation as Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov just announced.
Obviously with the mission of "human shield", Russian soldiers deployed on Middle Eastern soil have a much larger role than ordinary warriors, from tactical cards have changed to strategic ones.
In the coming time, the Syrian President can rest assured that he will hardly become the target of assassination bombings if he remains under the protection of Russian special operations units, and perhaps American bombs will still have to fall in areas far from the capital Damascus.
