In 2018 university and college admissions, experts recommend that candidates carefully research information about schools and should not register for too many options.

This year, many universities and colleges have introduced different admission methods to meet the needs of candidates, such as opening new majors and new subject combinations. This year's admission regulations also have some changes for both candidates and schools.

However, experts recommend that to have the highest chance of admission, candidates need to carefully research information of the schools and should not register too many wishes.

According to the circular amending and supplementing a number of articles of the Regulations on university and college admissions for teacher training majors of the Ministry of Education and Training, this year's admissions have 4 changes compared to 2017.

Specifically, the regional priority score for admission is only 0.25 points, a reduction of half compared to last year. The Ministry of Education and Training does not regulate the "floor score" for training majors, except for teacher training majors.

This year's admission scores are rounded to two decimal places instead of rounding to 0.25 points as before, and schools must publicly disclose information on the employment rate of graduates one year after graduation in the previous two years.

These changes are aimed at returning autonomy in admissions to schools, reducing shortcomings in priority points when considering admissions, and adding information channels for candidates to choose majors and schools.

From the change of the Regulations, many universities and colleges across the country have changed their admission methods, admission conditions, and opened new majors. In particular, many schools have also introduced new admission subject combinations to meet the needs of candidates such as: Literature, History, English; Literature, Civic Education, Foreign Languages; Mathematics, Biology, History...

Mr. Bui Xuan Nam, Vice Principal of the University of Mining and Geology, said: "In 2018, the University of Mining and Geology will still conduct enrollment according to the 3 methods of the Ministry of Education and Training. In particular, for some majors in the school, we have expanded the exam block to increase the choices for students. However, we still ensure the core that all majors have Mathematics, which is a basic subject. It can be said that it is a subject that all majors can learn when they have good knowledge of Mathematics."

Along with announcing enrollment information, schools also announce incentives for each training major, especially specific majors to attract candidates, such as scholarships, job referral support, etc.

According to Mr. Tran Khac Thac, Deputy Head of the Department of Undergraduate and Postgraduate Training, Thuy Loi University, some majors that are difficult to recruit at schools are not because graduates do not have jobs, but because students' career choices have changed.

They want to do easy, high-paying jobs in big cities, so they don't like technical fields, hard study, and working in special places.

"The University of Water Resources has some majors that are difficult to recruit, such as Marine Engineering, Hydrology, Hydraulic Engineering and some other majors. However, these majors are very necessary for socio-economic development, so the school still maintains and promotes them.

For majors that are difficult to recruit but are in demand by society, the school currently has many policy mechanisms. For example, incentives for students during their studies, incentives for job referrals, and connections with businesses and labor-using establishments," said Mr. Thac.

School leaders all recommend that candidates carefully consider information about majors, careers, job opportunities... before registering for admission. Although the Ministry of Education and Training has abolished the minimum score; schools have expanded admissions in many ways, with many new admission blocks..., candidates must have real capacity to be able to study university programs. If the combination of subjects for admission is different from the training program, studying will be difficult because students do not have the same basic knowledge block.

Mr. Hoang Xuan Hiep, Principal of Hanoi University of Textile and Garment Industry, warned: "Although the Ministry has abolished the floor score, if the entrance score is too low, the training process will be very difficult. Secondly, it is very likely that students with too low an entrance score will not have the capacity to absorb university-level knowledge. It is very likely that they will drop out of university, leading to unnecessary waste for the family, society and the school.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Phung, Director of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Training, also said that candidates can register for many wishes, but they will only be admitted to one single wish that matches their exam scores in each admission round.

If you have chosen a major that suits your abilities, interests, and businesses have a high demand for recruitment, you should register for admission from three to five wishes. In which, there should be wishes lower than your abilities, wishes equal to your abilities, and wishes higher than your abilities to guide your efforts.

Candidates should not register for too many wishes, register for majors and schools that are not suitable for their abilities to pass the university entrance exam at all costs, because they may not be able to follow the training program, or not find a job after graduation.

6 notes on 2018 enrollment in the draft of the Ministry of Education and Training

Lowering the priority score frame, rounding exam scores to 2 decimal places, giving priority to candidates who win fine arts awards... are included in the 2018 enrollment draft just announced by the Ministry of Education and Training.
