According to Mr. Putin, Avangard can reach speeds of Mach-20 (20 times the speed of sound) and has the ability to fly flexibly, making it able to overcome all existing missile defense systems in the world.
Avangard is also one of Russia's "big guns". Unlike Kinzhal, which is still in the testing phase, Avangard has already begun mass production. Deputy Defense Minister Yuriy Borisov said on March 12 that the Ministry had a contract to produce Avangard missiles after successful tests of this hypersonic missile.
In addition, Russia is also actively testing the naval version of the hypersonic missile “Zircon” 3M22, the mass production of which is expected to begin in the near future.
The Americans call this a leap forward in creating “symmetric weapons” to protect Russia against nuclear attacks.
According to the Washington Times, “Zircon” is capable of flying at eight times the speed of sound and is capable of overcoming any missile defense system.
However, this is not the final limit, according to the Russian Tactical Missiles Corporation, the potential for modernization of this type of missile allows reaching speeds of up to 12-13 Mach.
