Real Madrid is the most successful team in the Champions League with 12 championships. |
According to an announcement on its official website, the most powerful body in European football will allow three players to continue playing after moving to a new club, regardless of whether they have played in European competition or not.
This removes the restriction on players being limited to one of the two competitions. The most notable examples are Philippe Coutinho and Alexis Sanchez.
The Brazilian midfielder is ineligible to play for Barcelona because he has already qualified for Liverpool in the group stages of this year's Champions League; while the Chilean is eligible to play for Manchester United because he has only played for Arsenal in the Europa League.
Two other regulations that are also worth noting are the changes to the substitute players. In particular, from the Knock-out round of the two above arenas, teams will receive the right to make a fourth substitution during the two extra halves.
In addition, in the finals of the Champions League, Europa League and European Super Cup, each club will have 23 players registered in the official squad, instead of the previous number of 18.
The new UEFA regulations were approved on March 3 by IFAB - the body responsible for the laws of football.
